Message from the Founder:
I debated long and hard about sharing this, because I don’t like to dwell on negativity; however, I think it’s important to remind people of the plights we face as Black individuals in this world. 🌍
I knew, going into business with a name like Black Girls Need Sun, that I would face backlash and controversy, but I did it anyway. I was aware that a group like this would not be welcome in certain places, yet I still followed my heart. 💚
I’ve never been too concerned about social media, but I figured it would be a great way to get our message out to a multitude of people. For our most recent event, I decided to try a paid ad, in hopes that we could draw in attendees beyond our typical pool of participants. What I didn’t expect was for the wrong crowd to find their way to our page. 📄
To be completely honest, I got a little discouraged after seeing some of the posts left under our seemingly innocent one. Is it even worth it? I wondered. I’ve seen things like this on other accounts, but it’s different seeing it on your own. My daughter read the messages too (from adults might I add), and her heart broke for me. 💔
“Mommy, I don’t want you running these pages anymore.”
I’ve struggled my entire life to explain racism to my children, but how do you really explain to an innocent child that some people won't/don’t like them simply because of the skin they were born in… 😔
Creating spaces where we are protected and uplifted has somehow always been controversial. Seeking safety and refuge has always been a challenge, despite it being our birthright. Simply existing as Black people has always been a pain, yet we find beauty in the trauma. 🪷
I refuse to allow hate or willful ignorance to disrupt the peace that we are trying to attain. This world was made for us ALL, and we will not be silenced or bullied into submission by anyone. 🚫
If you want to help us in our mission to spread love and light across the globe, please show your support by donating to our cause, purchasing our merch, sharing our page, or by simply joining us in community. When one shines, we all shine! 🔆
Love & light, always,
Victoria Faith ✨
