Ode to a Sunbeam
My sister, Val, is such an amazing being and I am incredibly blessed to know her. Though we are not related by blood, you can’t tell me that’s not my Sis!
Val is an amazing mom to one of my favorite people in this world (my Moonbeam), and is also a wonderful aunt and influence to my four babies. She exudes love and positivity, and shines an incomparable light wherever she goes. With little effort, Val can touch the soul of anyone she meets on a deep and personal level.
On top of being an overall incredible person, she is a knowledgeable Black farmer who advocates for permaculture and food justice. Her expertise and talents made a major impact in the lives of the children she instructed at Project Lab, where she developed a regenerative garden on the Restoration & Wellness campus in the Ferguson-Florissant School District.
“Personally, I learned that we learn most when we’re able to use ourselves and the environment around us to teach and grow ourselves, and our understanding of our space and time here.”
Not only does Val grow and harvest a lot of her own food/medicine, she’s also an amazing chef! The heart and intention that goes into the preparation of her dishes is evident with each bite.
Val is vibrant, confident and hilarious as heck! She is sure to put a smile on your face with one of her witty jokes or by simply flashing her own brilliant smile. With a spirit of joy and compassion, Val encompasses everything that BGNS stands for.
So here’s to my sis, a divine soul who deserves all the praise and recognition for being the spectacular woman she is.
*Note: If you have a Sunbeam in your life, that you’d like us to shed light on, please submit their story (and a few photos) to blackgirlsneedsun@gmail.com so that we can highlight them in our blog!
